Company History

Life’s most precious moments are when you can sit back and dream of someday owning your own business or trade, which specializes in the hobby you, cherish the most.  This is how Tackle Haven came about and a bit of history in the making will be told in this brief bio. At the young age of 16, Rex Schuman became a salesman for his parents wholesale business specializing in Sporting Goods. Rex had taken to the road selling items ranging from fishing tackle to hunting gear, etc. After 20 years of wholesaling, Rex decided to take his knowledge and skills of selling to a new level.  This is when a retail fishing tackle business idea emerged into Rex’s marvelous mind. Rex had already been interested in his hobby of fishing.  He would fish the waters of Lake Michigan for salmon and steelhead and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Rex played with the idea and quickly found a perfect location to start this small retail fishing business, which would be known as Tackle Haven. 

Tackle Haven would have its first location next to the Black River in South Haven, Michigan. After a few years of successfully marketing fishing gear in South Haven, Rex set out to find a larger location, which would expand his now affluent business. A new location was found on the St Joseph River in Benton Harbor, Michigan. 

Benton Harbor is located a mere one port south.  This strategic move would turn out to be the perfect location to specialize in Great Lakes fishing and also have enough space to compliment Tackle Haven with two other businesses at the same location. Tackle Haven Marine and Riverview Party Store were chosen to provide all around service to compliment Tackle Haven. Tackle Haven Marine specializes in boat storage and Riverview Party Store with groceries, deli, beer and liquor. 

All three of these businesses are what makes this one location the perfect one stop shop for family and friends to meet before heading on the big pond for fun, leisure and sport. Tackle Haven is now a 5,ooo sq ft mecca of Great Lakes freshwater tackle.

The year 2003 was a transitional year in which Rex turned over the business to his two sons, Nate and Phil.  Rex remains on the board while Nate and Phil run the daily operations of the business.  Tackle Haven remains family owned and operated and continues to strive towards their number one goal: To offer a quality product to a worldwide customer base with second to none timely service.
